You're Ready to Adopt

Congratulations That’s fantastic news, and we’re over the moon for you. However, if you’ve not yet decided you’re 100% ready to make the move, there are plenty of things that still need some mulling over. For instance, have you considered whether you’ll need to alter your work schedule? Or how much you’ll need to budget for pet supplies? These are just a couple of the important questions you need to ask yourself.

Whether you’re absolutely certain you’re ready, or there’s still more research to be done, every potential pet owner could use a little refresher course in the matter. Here’s what you need to have before bringing home a pup of your own.

1.

You have enough time to devote to a dog

Having enough time to train a dog is probably the single most important requirement of a new dog owner. Even if you adopt an adult dog, you and your home are brand new for him, which means he still needs lots of your time and attention. Whether he’s already an impeccably trained canine or he’s entering your life in need of some TLC, any new pet will have a bit of an adjustment period in his new digs — and with his new owner.

If you are so busy before and after work with kids, sports etc, now is probably not the right time to adopt a dog

2.

You work from home

Let’s say you do work long hours, and scheduling time for yourself — or mental breaks at the very least — isn’t exactly your strong suit. However, if you work remotely or can convince your boss to let you work from home a few days a week, you may be in the clear. Just be sure you and whoever else lives at your house have come up with a clear schedule of doggy-duty days. If your in-office days overlap with your partner’s, make sure you do some research on dog walking services in your area.

3.

You’re finanically stable

Caring for a dog is no cheap task. You need to budget before taking the leap, and if your current bank account can’t support another member of the family, it’s a clear sign you’re not ready to take on the responsibility.

When considering your pet expenses, you should be thinking about supplies, standard procedures such as yearly vaccines, monthly worming. flea treatments, and out-of-the-blue emergencies. Rather than budgeting Sparky down to the cent, make sure you have enough emergency funds, just in case the unexpected pops up.

4.

You have no plans to relocate or take a big trip

Once you’ve determined your town, city, and housing location are ideal, it’s important you take into consideration any pending plans you have on your calendar. If you’re not planning on quitting your job and traveling the world for the next two years, you should be able to pick an appropriate time to get a dog. Just as a new pup needs to be a match for you, he needs to be a match for your lifestyle, too.

5.

You’ve done your research on different kinds of breeds

There are tons of breeds out there. From those that are great with kids to those that don’t require much physical activity, there’s a dog breed for just about every kind of dog lover that exists. Some are super intelligent, while others need to hang on to every command you give them. There are dogs that are independent, and those that prefer to cuddle every time you’re on the couch. You just need to figure out which breed best you and your lifestyle best.

6.

You’re not worried about fancy furniture, or a beautiful backyard

Some people keep their home so perfect that it seems as though no one actually lives there. The decor is impeccable, and the sofas aren’t made for sitting. And don’t even think about stepping foot in the living room — the furniture is far too fancy. You, however, are not one of these people, which is great.

Bringing any type of animal into your home comes with an adjustment period. Even dogs who eventually learn to stay out of certain rooms and keep off the couch didn’t always know those rules. Lucky for you and your future pup, you don’t really care. (Or at least you’re more than happy to throw a blanket over the furniture in the meantime, just in case.)

So, let’s talk about your lawn ….You need to be ready for your yard perhaps not looking as great as it currently does now. Dogs can be quite a challenge to lawn and garden proud homeowners, Are you ready for this?

7.

You want a best friend who will always be by your side

Simply put, you want a dog, and deep down, you know you’re ready. You’re nothing short of overjoyed at the very thought of finding your perfect match. You dream of the day you find the right breeder or shelter, and you just know it’s only a matter of time before your newest best friend chooses you as his lifelong companion. Ah, dogs, they’re just the greatest.

Please note we are a registered non-profit charity and rely on our wonderful volunteers to run the day to day operations.

We carefully review all applicants based on the information provided, we proceed to phone screen suitable applicants, following this we will arrange a meet and greet with all family members including dogs.

During this meeting, we will be assessing the behavior and interaction for a suitable match. If all is approved, we will continue with the application by completing relevant adoption documentation. We then thoroughly enjoy following our rescues journey and new life.

Q: Can we visit your facility and meet some dogs?

A: We are based out of a private home with majority of our dogs in foster homes across Melbourne, predominantly Northern suburbs. So no, there is no facility you can walk through and view every dog.

Q: What is your adoption process?

A: Once a dog is available, we will post a profile with a link for you to click on

This will take you directly to the Savourlife platform and our dogs profile

Simply click on the link and follow the instructions

Details of the dog and required information from you will all be listed, provide ALL listed details to be considered. If you are successful based on what you provide in your application, we will call you and discuss a potential meet and greet.

All available dogs and puppies can be viewed on our webpage and this is updated as each one becomes available.

Q: Why haven't I heard back about my application?

A: It takes time to review each application, conduct phone interviews, meet and greets etc. If your application was not successful we will work on sending you a courtesy email as soon as possible.

Q: Where are all these dogs coming from?

A: Pounds, surrenders, neglectful situations such as puppy farms.

Q: What is your adoption fee?

A: Fees vary based on factors such as age and required costs, e.g vet work. And is not determined until the dog is ready.

Q: What happens if a dog is not adopted?

A: Our dogs always get adopted, we do not have a period in which a dog must be adopted and have at times cared for dogs for 7+ months until their perfect home is found.

Q: Why was my application not successful?

A: There may be many factors, or simply yours was one of many deemed successful but there is only one dog so we have to make a choice.

Q: Can we opt to not have our dog desexed?

A: ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Q: We don't live in Victoria, can you send a dog to us?

A: Again ABSOLUTELY NOT, interstate adoption may be considered, only if you are willing to personally drive to and from for a meet and greet and potentially take the dog home.

Q: Can you private message me when a dog I'm interested in is available?

A: No, typically not, due to the amount of individual requests we recieve we cannot keep up, messages get lost or forgotten and we simply don’t have time, you are best to keep an eye on the page for updates.

Q: Can you give me more information on this recently arrived/in coming dog?

A: Dogs often come in with no known history so it takes some time for us to get to know them, we do our best to update on our page regularly. Please refrain from messaging regarding a dog that has just arrived and requesting further details, we will directly post to the page everything we know.

Q: I'd like to adopt this dog but would be unable to take them for sometime, can you hold them for me?

A: Typically not, it is our priority to have our dogs settled in to their forever homes as soon as possible and this also fills up a spot for the next dog in the pound needing to be saved.

Q: Why can't I adopt a dog if I already have one of the same sex?

A: We avoid rehoming dogs to home that already owns a dog of the same sex as a lot of our surrenders are due to dogs of the same sex that have lived together for a long time suddenly no longer getting along, so to ensure our dogs find forever homes we don’t like to risk it.

Please do not email, inbox or call us about dogs that are not yet available for adoption.

When dogs are available they are posted on this page with a full profile

We do not take pre adoption interest.

Please refer back to this post before contacting us, other queries are still welcome.

Thank you.
